The Anxious Generation is a 2024 book by Jonathan Haidt arguing that the decline of play-based childhoods and that the rise of smartphones and social media have caused a mental health crisis.

The book, supported by data, connects the "great rewiring of childhood" around 2010-2015 to increased anxiety, depression, and self-harm among young people, particularly girls.

Haidt suggests this phone-based childhood disrupts social and neurological development, leading to sleep deprivation, loneliness, and other issues.
